In 1903 architect Josef Hoffmann, together with Kolo Moser, founded the Wiener Werkstätte. He developed his simple geometric shapes starting from the curvilinear language of the European Art Nouveau. One of his most important works was the Stoclet Palace in Brussels (1905–1911).
Hoffmann’s cutlery set was first produced in 1906 by hand, in silver and silver plate, until 1910–1912. Now as part of the Alessi stable the set still reflects a search for functionality combined with extreme elegance and sophistication. While some of Hoffmann’s contemporaries raised doubts about the practical design of some of the items (the transversal concavity of the table spoon was one controversial point), those who actually used them refute these accusations.
